Sex robots will soon become as sophisticated as some mammals, the founder of a top doll manufacturer has claimed.

RealDoll boss Matt McMullen told Daily Star Online that the appearance of his robots powered by artificial intelligence (AI) are poised to “drastically improve”.

He believes they could look indistinguishable from humans in as little as five years.

But he also believes their AI could start to “approach something in the mammal category”.

At the event Sex Robots: Are We Ready?, held by Raspberry Dream Labs in London, we asked Mr McMullen if his company could make dolls that people assumed to be human.

Sex robots will ‘approach something in the mammal category’ claims Matt McMullen

He responded to Daily Star Online: “I would say probably within five to 10 years the appearance of a robot is going to drastically improve.

“AI may start to approach something in the mammal category but I don’t see, necessarily, human-like intelligence and as such I don’t think we can even consider the idea of human like self-awareness.

“That is really the big can of worms that people worry about with AI.

“So that’s a little bit further out but I do think the engineering side and the artistic side will come a long way in the next 10 years.”

Mr McMullen said current AI possesses around the intelligence of an earthworm, which is in the invertebrates animal group.

Sex robots are becoming increasingly sophisticated

Invertebrates make up 97% of all animals, according to National Geographic.

Meanwhile mammals, which include humans, are more complex in their nature.

Mr McMullen added: “I think in some ways that (robots looking identical to humans) is not that far off, and in other ways it seems so far off that I can’t predict.

“I think AI in particular has a huge amount of work that remains, even the smartest AI on the planet is probably about as bright as an earthworm.

“Something like a self-driving car may seem fantastical but it’s really not intelligence it’s just math.

“So real AI, the kind that everyone seems really concerned with when they ask about robots, that’s really far off.

“The physical nature of the robots, in terms of engineering and the underlying structures and machinery that make it move and the skin technology and the appearance of it, that part of it to me seems more tangible than the control.”
