A heroic bystander has been filmed running across London Bridge after taking away the attacker’s knife.

In the dramatic footage, a group of people are seen tackling the knifeman to the floor.

One man, dressed in a suit, gets the weapon away before running from the scene – waving others away.

Police descended, cleared the bystanders and opened fire – killing the terrorist.

Two loud bangs rang out as witnesses fled in horror around 2pm this afternoon.

One eyewitness said: “This man was walking behind us on the other side of London Bridge when the attack began.

“He ran through traffic and jumped the central partition to tackle the attacker with several others. We ran away but looks like he disarmed him. Amazing bravery.”

The man’s incredible courage has triggered a huge amount of praise on social media.

Gary Wilkes tweeted: “What a top man he is. If this account of what happened is accurate, the man needs a medal!”

Gill Stewart gushed: “What a hero he is! Absolutely gob-smacking bravery.”

And Matt added: “These are the type of people who should be knighted.”

Neil Basu, head of UK counter-terrorism policing, announced it “has been declared as a terror incident”.

The attacker was wearing a hoax explosive belt, Basu added.

A number of people have been injured, and are thought to be in a serious condition.

Eyewitness Caroline Bannock said: “I could see five or six people in a bundle, it looked like one of them had a makeshift weapon.

“Then all of a sudden everyone scattered and the police were there, I think it was three police officers.

“I heard two shots, one after the other. I think the person was on the ground and they shot him when he was on the ground.

“Then I thought why am I watching this, it could be a terrorist and others could be at large, so I rushed back to my office.”

Pictures from the scene show one large kitchen life lying next to the suspect’s body, with another removed by the bystander.

The surrounding area is on lockdown and all nearby business have been evacuated.

Gary Lawrence, 48, was driving a van on the bridge when he saw a man carrying two kitchen knives.

Two men then ran out of a building on the north side of the bridge.

One was reportedly armed with a 6ft long stick, and another sprayed the terrorist with a fire extinguisher.

Underground trains are not stopping at London Bridge as the station remains closed.

Prime Minister Boris Johnson said: “I’m being kept updated on the incident at London Bridge and want to thank the police and all emergency services for their immediate response.”

Home Secretary Priti Patel added: “Very concerned by ongoing incident at London Bridge.

“My thoughts are with all affected. I am grateful for the rapid response of our police and I urge everyone to follow their advice.”

The attack comes less than a month after the UK’s national terror threat level was downgraded from “severe” to “substantial”.
