One person was killed and six others were wounded when a gunman opened fire at a San Diego apartment complex pool during a birthday party Sunday, police said.

San Diego Police Chief Shelley Zimmerman said several of the victims were in critical condition at various hospitals in the area.

The shooter was identified as 49-year-old Peter Selis. Zimmerman described the shooter as a white male who was wearing brown shorts, but she did not reveal a motive behind the shooting. He died after a shootout with police at the pool area. Police believe he lived in the apartment complex.

Witnesses said there was a pool party going on when Selis opened fire. The San Diego Union-Tribune reported there were about 30 people in the area before the shooting occurred.

Police did not identify the shooting victims, but said four were black females, two were black males and one was a Hispanic male. Another black man broke his arm while fleeing the shooting, police said. One of the women later died in the hospital.

San Diego police officers responded to a 911 call about reports of a mass shooting at around 6:07 p.m. local time. Zimmerman said a police helicopter was among the first to arrive at the scene and the pilot saw the shooter appear to reload his gun at the pool.

One witness told Fox 5 San Diego that he saw three people had been shot on a sidewalk at the apartment complex. He said he ran into the clubhouse and saw two other people bloodied.

“We looked at the pool area where the shooter was sitting there with a beer in one hand and a gun in the other,” a witness told the station. “The suspect looked pretty relaxed, pretty relaxed.”

Shahrayar Jeff, another witness, told the Union-Tribune that his granddaughters were at the pool with their grandmother and nanny. He said his 8-year-old granddaughter told him that the gunman was sitting and drinking a beer and “relaxing and shooting.”

Another witness told Fox 5 San Diego that he saw police officers approach the pool area. The gunman then started to fire at police officers, but they shot back and eventually killed him.

“It was like a war zone or something,” Anna Godbole told the Union-Tribune. “There would be three or four shots, a pause and then more shots. I was trying to count them. I counted 30 or 40.”
