A seven-year-old boy was playing outside his home in upstate New York with his eight-year-old brother before he fell through the ice of the Susquehanna River on Sunday and died, investigators said, identifying the child as Connor Brown of Conklin.

The boy’s mother was heard yelling and ran and outside to try to save her son, Broome County Sheriff’s Lt. Ben Harting added. Police say his mother and brother also fell through the ice and were pulled from the water by neighbors.

Harting says the investigation is ongoing.

The Broome County Sheriff’s Department responded at about 5:50 p.m. on March 19 to reports that a child was trapped under the ice.

Multiple emergency personnel responded to the scene and around 6:19 pm, Conklin Fireman Nick Platt located the boy in the river nearby and pulled him from the water; he was transported to Wilson Hospital.

Police determined the boy had fallen into the river.

Conklin Fire Chief Bill Gorman said his unit received reports one child was trapped in the water and a second child was trying to pull the boy out.
