Attorney General Jeff Sessions said Thursday that he did not speak about the Trump campaign with any Russian officials.

“The question that came to me was from Senator Franken and we went into a great length saying that day a new story had come out saying various Trump surrogates were meeting continually with Russian officials as part of the campaign,” he said in an interview with Fox News’ Tucker Carlson Thursday night.

“My answer went straight to that, it was the first time I had heard that. So, I focused that I hadn’t had any such meetings […] to advance any campaign agenda.”

Earlier on Thursday, Sessions recused himself from any sort of investigation going forward involving President Trump and his 2016 campaign, and possible ties to the Russian government.

It took less than 24 hours for Sessions to recuse himself after a report that he did not disclose communications he had with Russian Ambassador Sergey Kislyak last year when he was testifying before the Senate Judiciary Committee during his confirmation.

Sessions added that the meeting with the ambassador was related to a bigger one with other ambassadors.

“We had a meeting with some 25 ambassadors on recent months while I was senator and the Russian ambassador was just one of them,” the former Alabama senator said, adding that he doesn’t think anyone part of that meeting “would have seen or believed I said one thing that was improper or unwise.”

Sessions also defended his decision to recuse himself from an investigation going forward, saying it was consistent with previous comments he made that he would not be part of any should there be some sort of conflict of interest.

“Recusal is not an admission of any wrongdoing. It’s simply … whether or not you can be perceived as fairly deciding a case,” Sessions explained.
