Bill Nye is showing his support for a Democrat who has campaigned to keep the Environmental Protection Agency “great” under President Trump.

Nye, who became a household name in the 1990s with his popular show “Bill Nye the Science Guy,” has been meeting with lawmakers on Capitol Hill this week to discuss climate science and space exploration.

Rep. Don Beyer tweeted a picture Wednesday of Nye holding a hat that the Virginia Democrat wore to the first House Science, Space and Technology hearing after Trump’s inauguration, which was titled, “At What Cost? Examining the Social Cost of Carbon.” The red hat, designed similarly to Trump’s “Make America Great Again” caps, boasted the words: “Keep The EPA Great.”

The congressman explained: “I showed @BillNye my new hat, and – being a fan of scientific integrity & environmental protection – he gave #KeepTheEPAGreat a thumbs up.”

Trump’s presidency has been the subject of some concern for many scientists who believe the burning of fossil fuels is driving manmade climate change. Trump tweeted back in 2012 that climate change is a hoax perpetrated by the Chinese. In regards to the EPA, there have been reports that Trump is looking to cut the budget and staff of the agency, now headed by Scott Pruitt. As attorney general of Oklahoma, Pruitt sued the EPA on multiple occasions.

Trump has already rolled back one of the Obama-era EPA regulations through executive action, and Republicans in Congress had for years decried what that saw as executive overreach by Obama’s EPA. One Republican has even introduced a bill to “terminate” the EPA.

At last month’s hearing, the House science committee chairman, Rep. Lamar Smith, R-Texas, criticized many of the EPA’s regulations as being “based on a one-sided political agenda.”

Breyer, who wore the hat at the hearing in protest of any attacks on the EPA, argued, “The EPA has led to clearer skies, cleaner water and vast improvements to public health.”
