President Trump called stories about Trump campaign contacts with Russia “fake news” Sunday, saying the reporting is driven by Democrats and journalists hoping to divert attention from Hillary Clinton’s defeat and illegal leaks coming out of the administration.

“Russia talk is FAKE NEWS put out by the Dems, and played up by the media, in order to mask the big election defeat and the illegal leaks!” Trump tweeted.

A battle has been raging on the Sunday morning news shows about whether Attorney General Jeff Sessions should recuse himself from any investigation into contacts between the Trump campaign and Russian officials. Newly installed Democratic National Committee Chairman Tom Perez led the charge by demanding a special prosecutor, but a White House spokeswoman said there was no need to address the matter now.

Multiple reports this week indicated some of Trump’s associates on the campaign were in frequent contact with Russian intelligence officials during the presidential campaign. Those reports were leaked out through administration sources and Trump used a Friday speech to rip the usage of anonymous sources.

The White House has maintained that there is no connection between Trump and the Russians and all this reporting does is serve to remind Democrats of their defeat in the 2016 presidential election.

It’s unclear if this information that was leaked was classified or not. Leaking classified information is a crime, but leaks of non-classified information are not illegal.
