Rep. Darrell Issa, R-Calif., on Friday said it would be necessary for Attorney General Jeff Sessions to recuse himself and have a special prosecutor appointed to oversee any legal action brought as a result of congressional investigations into contacts between President Trump’s campaign team and Russian officials.

The nine-term lawmaker and former House Oversight chairman told HBO host Bill Maher the House and Senate would look into the matter but was interrupted.

“And Jeff Sessions should recuse himself – the same way Loretta Lynch recused herself – because he was part of the Trump campaign?” Maher asked.

“As I was saying, number two is – would be – you’re right, you cannot just have somebody, a friend of mine, Jeff Sessions, who was on the campaign and who was an appointee,” Issa said.

“You’re going to need to use the special prosecutors statue in office to take – not just to recuse, that’s – you can’t just give it to your deputy, that’s another appointee.”

“This is a bad guy who murders people who runs a gas station with the economy the size of Italy, but is screwing up things all over the world that we’ve been doing – quote – working with,” Issa said, referring to Russian President Vladimir Putin.

“Now we have to work with them, we don’t have to trust them. And we need to investigate their activities, and we need to do it because they are bad people.”

Sessions was the first senator to endorse Trump in 2015 and was selected as the president’s attorney general during the transition period.
