CNN’s Chris Cuomo was absent Friday from “New Day,” the morning show he usually co-anchors, following comments he made on social media about intolerance toward transgender people.

David Gregory filled in for Cuomo.

After this story published, a CNN spokesperson told the Washington Examiner that Cuomo had already been scheduled to take the day off.

Cuomo spent hours the previous day fighting people on Twitter over whether there is a danger in allowing people to use the public restroom of their choice, depending on which gender they identify as.

“What do you tell a 12-year-old girl who doesn’t want to see a penis in the locker room?” one person said to Cuomo.

He replied, “I wonder if she is the problem or her overprotective and intolerant dad? Teach tolerance.”

Cuomo was bombarded with messages from critics who said his views could subject young girls to sex predators.

“I have two young daughters,” Cuomo said in his defense. “I have the same instinct to protect. Seeing the basis for equality doesn’t make you pro predator.”

The controversy comes two weeks after he, again on social media, said being called “fake news” is a slur equivalent to the n-word. He apologized following intense blowback.
