Breitbart News Editor-in-Chief Alex Marlow said Tuesday that the comments about sex between adults and minors made by conservative provocateur Milo Yiannopolous, who works for Breitbart, were “absolutely indefensible.”

On Breitbart’s SiriusXM radio show Tuesday, Marlow said Yiannopoulos, the site’s technology editor, would be holding a press conference later in the day to address the matter but did not say whether he would continue working for Breitbart.

“The comments are absolutely indefensible, they’re appalling and very disappointing that those came out,” Marlow said. “However, there is context. Some of the context is Milo is a gay man who was abused as a child. Those are not irrelevant.”

Marlow went on to say that “the left” is often forgiving of liberal celebrities or prominent figures who have also said controversial things on sex, such as “Girls” creator Lena Dunham.

Videos resurfaced over the weekend showing Yiannopoulos commenting on sex between gay adults and minors.

“There’s video that appeared to show him justifying sex between an adult and a minor, at least in certain circumstances, which was very troubling and upsetting,” Marlow said. “[Yiannopoulos] seemed to be speaking from personal experience as a gay man. He also revealed that he’s a victim of child abuse himself. He himself has told me that he’s never had any inappropriate contact with a minor since he has been an adult. So, the situation was reversed, further complicating things. It’s all very upsetting and something that we take very seriously at Breitbart and we’ve been going through things and trying to figure out what’s the best way to handle this but the bottom line is the comments on the video are not defensible.”

In one of the videos, Yiannopoulos is seen saying, “In the homosexual world, particularly, some of those relationships between younger boys and older men — the sort of ‘coming of age’ relationship — those relationships in which those older men help those young boys discover who they are and give them security and safety and provide them with love and a reliable, sort of rock, where they can’t speak to their parents.”

Yiannopoulos has since said he was not trying to justify sex between adults and minors, and blamed the controversy on selective editing of old videos.

The Conservative Political Action Conference, the biggest annual gathering of conservatives, canceled an appearance Yiannopoulos was scheduled to make, following the controversy.
