President Trump took to Twitter early Sunday to defend recent immigration enforcement actions after Democrats raised concerns after the raids.

“The crackdown on illegal criminals is merely the keeping of my campaign promise. Gang members, drug dealers & others are being removed!” Trump wrote.

Trump, who signed an executive order Jan. 25 regarding the detention of undocumented immigrants, made cracking down on illegal immigration a central focus of his campaign.

Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents arrested hundreds of illegal immigrants across the U.S. last week. ICE said “many” of the arrested individuals had previous felony convictions, including violent charges like child sex crimes, weapons or assault charges, CNN reported.

The raids are the first concerted effort under Trump targeting undocumented immigrants.

“These activities have caused fear and uncertainty for many of constituents,” California Rep. Lou Correa wrote to immigration officials.

David Marin, Los Angeles field office director for ICE, said planning of the raids began during the Obama administration.

“We do these operations two to three times a year,” Marin said, adding that they take weeks of planning. “This is on par with past operations.”
