Christian leaders and organizations are praising President Trump’s decision to nominate Judge Neil Gorsuch of Colorado to fill the Supreme Court vacancy created by Justice Antonin Scalia’s death almost a year ago.

The head of the Catholic-based fraternal organization Knights of Columbus praised Gorsuch’s nomination Tuesday night.

“From [Gorsuch’s] writings and his record it is clear that he will interpret the Constitution as it was written, including our First Amendment right to religious freedom, and the right to life of every person,” said Carl Anderson, supreme knight of the Knights of Columbus. “It is hard to imagine a better, and more qualified, candidate. The Senate should swiftly confirm Judge Gorsuch to the Supreme Court.”

Faith and Freedom Coalition President Ralph Reed similarly praised Trump’s selection of Gorsuch and noted the evangelical Christian community’s faith in Trump to competently fill the Supreme Court vacancy. Reed said the Faith and Freedom Coalition would work “tirelessly” to support Gorsuch’s confirmation.

“We never doubted then-candidate Trump’s sincerity or commitment, and by nominating Judge Neil Gorsuch, he has now kept that promise,” Reed said. “Judge Gorsuch is a widely respected jurist whose razor-sharp intellect is complemented by his temperament and the knowledge of the law. He is exactly who the nation needs as a Supreme Court justice in the model of the late Antonin Scalia.”

Family Research Council President Tony Perkins witnessed Gorsuch’s nomination at the White House on Tuesday, and said afterward that his organization was committed to working with the president and senators to “move the grassroots” to help confirm Gorsuch.

“Judge Gorsuch’s record over the last 14 years, especially on religious liberty, gives Americans every reason to believe he will make a fine Supreme Court justice,” Perkins said. “His reputation as a judge with integrity and dedication to the Constitution should be an encouragement to all Americans.

“This will be a battle but I am confident the president will get his nominee confirmed.”

Neal Katyal served as acting solicitor general after Obama tapped Elena Kagan to serve as a Supreme Court Justice, and now Katyal “strongly support[s]” Gorsuch’s confirmation.

“Judge Gorsuch is one of the most thoughtful and brilliant judges to have served our nation over the last century,” Katyal said in a statement.

“As a judge, he has always put aside his personal views to serve the rule of law. To boot, as those of us who have worked with him can attest, he is a wonderfully decent and humane person.
