Multiple people were killed Sunday night after a group of shooters open fire inside a Quebec City mosque.

Approximately 40 attendees were at the Quebec City Islamic Cultural Center for evening prayers at the time of the incident. The mosque’s president, Mohamed Yangui, was not at the service when the shooting started, but said he received calls from those at the mosque shortly after the shooting started.

He told reporters that five people had been killed in the shooting, according to Reuters. Quebec City Police confirmed on Twitter that multiple people were dead and injured, but did not share exact numbers.

“Why is this happening here? This is barbaric,” Yangui said.

Law enforcement officers reported victims have been transported to local hospitals. Police have two suspects in custody as of late Sunday.

A pig’s head was left on the front door to the Quebec City mosque last June.
