House Speaker Paul Ryan, R-Wis., and President Trump are dedicating a good portion of their Monday evening to getting on the same page ahead of the Republican retreat slated to begin Wednesday in Philadelphia.

Trump hosted the top congressional leaders of both parties for a reception Monday at the White House. Afterward, he and Ryan met privately to discuss the party’s agenda, particularly healthcare and tax reform, said a knowledgeable aide.

Once that meeting adjourned, Ryan headed back to the Capitol where he would host dinner and further talks in his office with other Trump administration officials and some of the House leadership, including Vice President Mike Pence, Majority Leader Kevin McCarthy, and House Ways and Means Committee Chairman Kevin Brady.

Pence said in a brief statement to the press that the earlier meeting was about “the agenda, the enthusiasm that [Trump] has for our efforts to make America great again.” He did not answer when asked what the later meeting was about.

After the House meeting, Pence made another short statement to the press, saying “We made good progress tonight.”

Pence then returned to the White House to swear in Mike Pompeo as director of the CIA after the Senate voted to confirm his nomination, according to an aide.

Trump is headlining the retreat and congressional Republican leaders have been promising for weeks that they will use the opportunity to firm up their agenda for Trump’s first 100 days.

Congressional leaders and top staffers and transition team members and officials have been meeting for weeks to discuss everything from healthcare to trade to taxes to foreign policy.

Beyond Ryan’s “better way” agenda unveiled last summer, details of what exactly Republicans want to do and it what order they will pursue their priorities have been scarce.
