Former House Speaker Newt Gingrich on Monday blasted Democrats’ persistent claims that attorney general nominee Sen. Jeff Sessions is racist. The Trump surrogate compared liberal lawmakers to zombies on the AMC show “The Walking Dead.”

“First of all, it’s amazing how incompetent and lacking in imagination the liberal Democrats have become. If this is the best they can do, they might as well go home and relax,” Gingrich told Fox News host Sean Hannity.

“What I am struck with is how brain-dead the left is. I mean, it’s kind of like the series the ‘Walking Dead.’ These folks get up in the morning, walk down the hall yelling ‘racist.’ That’s all they’ve got left. I think it is derision. This is the behavior of a pathetic generation of left-wingers who have nothing left except chanting old slogans.”

The Senate Judiciary Committee will hold confirmation hearings for Sessions on Tuesday and Wednesday. The Alabama senator has been engulfed by attacks from congressional lawmakers and advocacy groups over the past few weeks. Some have labeled the former Alabama attorney general as racist, charges Gingrich said have been proven to be false.

“Jeff Sessions not only prosecuted the head of the Ku Klux Klan, and won the case, he also got an $8 million judgment against the Klan in Alabama,” Gingrich said. “It’s pretty hard to argue that these are behaviors of somebody who was in any way racist.”

The Trump surrogate proposed Democratic lawmakers have attacked Sessions in order to fundraise for themselves or the party.
