Rep. Adam Schiff, D-Calif., said Russia’s efforts to interfere in the 2016 election went far beyond what any country has previously done, making foreign influence in elections outcomes a serious concern.

“Here’s what’s different about what Russia did: They didn’t just steal data, they weaponized it. They dumped it during an election with the specific intent of influencing the outcomes of that election and sowing discord in the United States. That is not something China has ever done. That is not something frankly Russia has ever done here, although it has done it in Europe,” Schiff told ABC on Sunday,

Schiff, a member of the House Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence, said the evidence that Russia was responsible for the hacks of the Democratic National Committee and the personal account of Hillary Clinton campaign manager John Podesta, was “overwhelming” in the judgment of the intelligence. He said President-elect Donald Trump, whose transition team has voiced extreme skepticism that Russia was behind the hacking, should accept that consensus.

“If he’s going to have any credibility as president, he needs to stop talking this way. He needs to stop denigrating the intelligence community. He’s going to rely on them. He’s going to have to rely on them,” Schiff said.

The Obama administration slapped official sanctions on Russia in retaliation for the interference last week, but Schiff argued that they did not go far enough. “We think that more has to be done. We don’t think that, frankly, the steps that have been taken are enough of a deterrent, and you’re going to see bipartisan support in Congress for stronger sanctions,” he said.

He warned of a “vigorous” bipartisan pushback if the incoming Trump administration tries to weaken Obama’s Russia sanctions.
