A Drexel University professor decided to commemorate Christmas this year by taking to Twitter and calling for “white genocide.”

On Christmas Eve, George Ciccariello-Maher, associate professor of politics and global studies at the Philadelphia-based university, tweeted: “All I Want for Christmas is White Genocide.”

His Twitter account is now private, but screenshots show he attempted to clarify his comments soon after. He has more than 10,500 followers.

“To clarify: when the whites were massacred during the Haitian revolution, that was a good thing indeed,” he posted later on Saturday night.

In a statement Sunday night, Drexel called the comments “utterly reprehensible” and” deeply disturbing,” adding that the tweets “do not in any way reflect the values of the University.”

The statement said that though the university “recognizes the right of its faculty to freely express their thoughts and opinions in public debate,” it is “taking this situation very seriously. We contacted Ciccariello-Maher today to arrange a meeting to discuss this matter in detail.”

According to his personal website, Ciccariello-Maher “has taught radical theory and politics at Drexel, U.C. Berkeley, San Quentin State Prison, and the Venezuelan School of Planning in Caracas.”
