President Obama marked his final Christmas in the White House by giving himself a pat on the back for his work to pull the U.S. out of the Great Recession and getting 20 million more Americans insured under the Affordable Care Act.

Appearing beside his wife Michelle in their final Christmas weekly address to the nation Saturday, Obama said the “greatest gift” for the couple has been to serve the country over the last eight years as president and first lady.

“Together, we fought our way back from the worst recession in 80 years, and got unemployment to a nine-year low,” Obama said. “We secured health insurance for another 20 million Americans, and new protections for folks who already had insurance. We made America more respected around the world, took on the mantle of leadership in the fight to protect this planet for our kids, and much, much more.”

“We made America more respected around the world, took on the mantle of leadership in the fight to protect this planet for our kids, and much, much more,” Obama added. “By so many measures, our country is stronger and more prosperous than it was when we first got here.”

“I’m hopeful we’ll build on the progress we’ve made in the years to come,” Obama said, in what is perhaps a subtle nod to incoming president Donald Trump. Once in office, Trump has pledged to alter or undo much of Obama’s work as president, including a repeal of Obamacare.

Michelle Obama also made a pitch to Americans to support U.S. troops by visiting JoiningForces.gov, a national initiative she and second lady Jill Biden started in 2011 to assist service members, veterans and their families.

“Their courage and dedication allow the rest of us to enjoy this season,” Michelle Obama said. “That’s why we’ve tried to serve them as well as they’ve served this country.”
