The Anti-Defamation League Thursday called out press outlets that erroneously reported a Jewish family had fled Pennsylvania over a cancelled Christmas play, because of harassment provoked by Fox News and Breitbart.

The ADL “read many numerous local and national news stories reporting that a Jewish Family allegedly ‘fled’ Lancaster County, Pennsylvania” after they objected to a Christmas play with great concern, the organization said in a statement.

These reports “claimed that the family feared retribution after being wrongfully blamed for the cancellation of the school production of A Christmas Carol,” based on Charles Dickens’ classic tale of miserliness and visitations and redemption.

The Jewish organization “investigated and found that in actuality, the family left on vacation for winter break.”

Nancy Baron-Baer, ADL regional director, called the reports “untrue and damaging.”

“We spoke with the family, who explained that they went on a previously-planned vacation for the holidays,” she reported.

She said the ADL was speaking out because “stories like this one can sow fear in the Jewish community and beyond, and it is important to stop the spread of misinformation.”

Lest folks miss the point, she added, “There is no truth to the rumor that the school cancelled A Christmas Carol at the request of parents.”

Rather, the possibly Scrooge-like Hempfield School District “released a FAQ clearly stating that the play was cancelled due to the inordinate amount of class time taken up by rehearsals.”
