Russia’s ambassador to Turkey was shot Monday, according to reports.

Ambassador Andrei Karlov was attending an art gallery in Ankara, the capital of Turkey, when a gunman opened fire.

Initial reports said he was hospitalized, but later reports said he died from his injuries.

“Hürriyet reporter Haşim Kılıç, who was at the scene during the attack, said attendants at the exhibit ran away after the attacker fired into the air,” reported Hurriyet, a Turkish outlet. “The attacker then targeted Karlov, Kılıç said.”

The name of the ambassador was corrected from the first version of this story.
