James Alefantis, the owner of Comet Ping Pong in Washington, D.C., said on Thursday that the staff at his pizza parlor are still being harassed and “terrorized” by people nearly two weeks after local police confirmed there was no child sex ring in the restaurant’s basement.

“Yes. It’s like being terrorized. It’s been over a month of daily death threats to me, hundreds of phone calls to the restaurant asking for all kinds of wild things like ordering a cheese pizza,” Alefantis told Fox News host Megyn Kelly. “My staff lives in fear. My staff are the bravest people I’ve ever met. We’re trying to make sure they’re safe and do their job. Imagine someone coming to your workplace with an assault rifle.”

On Dec. 4, a man from North Carolina traveled to the district to rescue children. He had read in a false report on the Internet that they were part of a sex ring established by Hillary Clinton. The 28-year-old, Edgar Maddison Welch, walked into Comet and aimed his assault rifle at customers and staff. Police arrived soon after and subdued the suspect. No one was injured.

The incident was provoked by a pre-election story that went viral on chat boards. Alefantis said people have continued to verbally attack him and his family and staff on social media channels and in the restaurant itself.

“It’s a pack of lies. And it’s dangerous. What happens is this person was inspired to drive across four state lines with an assault rifle and enter a family friendly restaurant at 3:00 in the afternoon on a Sunday. You can imagine the fear that must have been felt by these people. And this is real consequences,” Alefantis said.

The community in Northwest D.C. has been supportive, the owner said, rallying around the neighborhood pizza joint. He also said they now have private security on hand to help people and employees feel safe.

As far as debunking fake news before it goes viral, Reddit has banned this specific topic on its website, but Alefantis said that’s not enough.

“I think there has to be some way of breaking these things up. There’s no – it’s impossible that this news can go from one person to the next, the next and the grand conspiracy theory and there’s no reporting, no ability to do anything,” he finished.
