The sister of a Muslim woman who was arrested this week for filing a false police report alleging a hate crime really isn’t helping anything.

Sara Seweid said her sister indeed lied about being harassed in New York City by three supposed Donald Trump supporters, but she also went out of her way to accuse media and law enforcement officials of acting badly.

“I’m not excusing what my sister did,” Sara Seweid said Thursday in a Facebook post. “I was horrified yesterday and I’m still trying to grapple with the facts. Things snowballed out of our control because of the media … Reporters made things so much worse for our family.”

Yasmin Seweid, 18, claimed on Dec. 2 that she was bullied on the subway by drunk Trump supporters.

“Three white racists ripped the straps off my bag & attempted to yank my hijab off my head. They yelled such disgusting slurs at me, I was so helpless and felt defenseless. ‘Look it’s a f—king terrorist’, ‘go back to your country’, ‘take that rag off your head’, and so many more,” she said in a since-deleted Facebook post. “Trump’s name was repeatedly said & it finally clicked in my head. No matter how ‘cultured’ or ‘Americanized’ I am, these people don’t see me as an American. Trump America is real and I witnessed it first hand last night! What a traumatizing night.”

She filed a police report, and newsrooms quickly repeated her story uncritically. However, after deploying a significant number of assets to investigate the story, authorities could find no evidence of the reported incident.

After additional searching and questioning, Yasmin Seweid reportedly admitted Wednesday to fabricating the story. She was arrested and charged with filing a false report. She was arraigned and released early Thursday morning.

“Nothing happened, and there was no victim,” a police source told the New York Daily News.

Citing a police official, the same article added, “Seweid made up the story because she didn’t want to get in trouble for breaking her curfew after being out late drinking with friends.”

But somehow media and the NYPD are the real villains here, according the alleged hoaxer’s sister.

“It became super clear to me these past two weeks that the police’s first instinct is to doubt your story and try to disprove it,” Sara Seweid wrote. “The NYPD doesn’t care about us or our safety. Never did. This won’t make things for Muslims any worse than they have been.”

In the same post where she attacked the NYPD for supposedly not caring about Muslim women, the younger Seweid also claimed police should have never investigated her sister’s reported hate crime.
