Mitt Romney called his Tuesday dinner with President-elect Trump and incoming chief of staff Reince Priebus “engaging” and “enlightening,” during an informal press conference following the meeting.

“The last few weeks he’s been carrying out a transition effort and I have to tell you I’ve been impressed by what I’ve seen in the transition effort. The people he’s selected as members of his Cabinet are solid, effective, capable people,” Romney told members of the press Tuesday evening.

“What I’ve seen through these discussions I’ve had with President-elect Trump, as well as what we’ve seen in his speech at the night of his victory — as well as the people he’s selected as part of his transition — all of those things combined give me increasing hope that President-elect Trump is the very man who can lead us to that better future,” Romney added.

The 2012 Republican presidential nominee praised South Carolina Gov. Nikki Haley, Georgia Rep. Tom Price, Alabama Sen. Jeff Sessions and Betsy Devos as appointees he personally knows well and is happy to see advising the businessman-turned-politician.

Romney added that he believes America’s “best days are ahead of us,” sending a message he is optimistic about the Trump administration.

Romney did not answer questions of whether he is still in the running for secretary of state or who paid for the dinner.
