2012 Republican presidential nominee Mitt Romney is under “active consideration” to become America’s top diplomat under the next administration, Vice President-elect Mike Pence said Sunday.

Romney met privately with President-elect Donald Trump and his aides in New Jersey on Saturday, creating intense speculation that the former Trump critic had become a Cabinet contender for secretary of state.

“The president-elect was very grateful that Gov. Mitt Romney came out,” Pence said during an interview on “Fox News Sunday.” He claimed the two men, who exchanged sharp barbs throughout the election, had “a warm and a substantive exchange.”

“It was a cordial meeting,” he said. “But more importantly to the American people, it was a very substantive conversation and I know the president-elect was grateful that Mitt Romney came here to Trump National [Golf Club] and spent some time and is willing to be considered for this important role at such an important time in the life of our nation.”

Romney spent an hour meeting with Trump, Pence and senior members of their transition team on Saturday. He told reporters afterwards that he had a “far-reaching conversation” about foreign policy and national security with the Trump team.

“We discussed those areas and exchanged our views on those topics,” he said, adding that he “appreciate[d] the chance to speak with the president-elect and look forward to the coming administration.”

Others whose names have been floated to lead the State Department include former New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani, former United Nations Ambassador John Bolton and South Carolina Gov. Nikki Haley.
