Democratic Rep. Keith Ellison ripped President-elect Trump on Sunday for committing “extraordinary” abuse against working Americans and making campaign promises he can’t keep.

“Donald Trump has already proven where he’s going with this thing,” Ellison, who is in the running to become chairman of the Democratic National Committee, told CBS’ John Dickerson in reference to Trump’s promise to “drain the swamp” in Washington — which is a reference to removing the corruption of D.C. establishment politics.

“He’s not draining the swamp. He’s filling it up more and there’s going to be more swamp creatures than ever before,” he said.

Ellison said the incoming Republican president is “clearly not normal” and “his level of abuse of working people is extraordinary.”

“It’s hard to normalize that, and we can never do it, but I would just say that it’s not about Donald Trump,” he continued. “We have got to be there to work with all those folks who may have not voted or even voted for him.”

The co-chair of the Congressional Progressive Caucus encouraged members of his party to show Americans, particularly working-class voters, “that we really care about them, that we respect their voice and that we are going to be fighting for them.”

“If we make those people the priority, we will win,” he predicted.

Ellison has been endorsed to replace interim DNC Chairwoman Donna Brazile by incoming Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer and failed Democratic presidential hopeful Bernie Sanders. DNC members are expected to convene in February or March to vote for a new party leader.
