Democratic Rep. Adam Schiff thinks Mitt Romney would be a “consummate diplomat” and excellent choice for secretary of state in the next administration.

“In this new world, I would love Mitt Romney at the State Department,” the California lawmaker told CNN’s Jake Tapper on Sunday. “I think he would be a consummate diplomat.”

Romney is under “active consideration” to be the nation’s top diplomat under the Trump administration, according to Vice President-elect Pence. But Schiff suggested that the incoming Republican president is pulling a “head fake” by teasing Romney as a Cabinet contender.

“I think he could come up to speed on foreign policy issues but I think it’s a total head fake,” Schiff said. “I think this is Donald Trump still being the entertainer, still running a show where he wants to build suspense.”

Schiff continued, “He alone knows which contestant will be the winner, and I think it’s more a nod to give the appearance of bringing people together but I would be very surprised if he chooses Romney.”

Romney spent more than hour meeting with Trump, Pence and top aides on Saturday at the president-elect’s golf club in Bedminster, N.J. It was the first time the two men have met face-to-face since their repeated verbal sparring matches during the election.

“We had a far-reaching conversation with regard to the various theaters in the world where there are interests of the United States of real significance. We discussed those areas and exchanged our views on those topics,” Romney told reporters after their meeting.
