Liberty University president Jerry Falwell Jr., one of President-elect Trump’s earliest evangelical supporters, has expressed interest in serving in the next administration in a capacity that would allow him to influence education policy.

“I let them know one of my passions is reforming higher education and education in general,” Falwell said of Trump’s transition team in an interview this week with the Richmond Times-Dispatch. “I told them I’d be willing… to serve in some capacity that sort of brings education back to some form of sanity.”

Falwell has served as chancellor of Liberty University, the largest Christian college in the U.S., since 2003. He invited Trump and Vice President-elect Mike Pence to speak to students there earlier this year and remained a steadfast supporter of the incoming Republican president even after other evangelical leaders ditched Trump in the wake of the “Access Hollywood” audio tape scandal.

Falwell said he has spoken with both Trump and Pence since their sweeping election victory last Tuesday, during which he conveyed his interest in taking on a role within their administration. He framed such conversations as “very informal” but claimed both men were pleased with his offer.

“They were very surprised because they know how busy I am,” he said, describing Pence and Trump as “glad” to hear his offer.

Falwell also slammed other Christian colleges and universities across the country that have allowed students to skip their classes without consequence in order to protest the election results.

“Those are nonprofit schools. They are subject to the Johnson Amendment… and they’re saying, ‘We’ll help you mourn since the wrong guy won,'” he said. “If Liberty had done that after [President] Obama had won, we would have been called on the carpet on the Johnson Amendment and our tax exemption would have been at stake.”
