Arthur Sulzberger, Jr., publisher of the New York Times, reminded staff Friday in a public memo that it is the paper’s duty to cover the incoming Trump administration fairly.

“The Times is certainly not afraid — our investigative report has demonstrated our courage many times over,” the memo said. “That fearless, hard-fought journalism will always stand as the backbone of The Times, no matter the president. But we also approach the incoming Trump administration without bias. We will cover his policies and his agenda fairly.”

After President-elect Trump’s surprise win on Election Day, the national media took on a self-reflective role, considering why almost every news outlet believed Democrat Hillary Clinton would win the race in a landslide.

Reporters and commentators found they had misread Trump’s popularity among voters, largely because they had overlooked or ignored many of them.

Sulzberger said in his memo that the Times should keep that in mind.

“We will look within and beyond Washington to explore the roots of the anger that has roiled red and blue America,” he said. “If many Americans no longer seem to understand each other, let’s make it our job to interpret and explain.”

The Times’ Executive Editor Dean Baquet made a similar comment in a recent interview.

“If I have a mea culpa for journalists and journalism, it’s that we’ve got to do a much better job of being on the road, out in the country, talking to different kinds of people than the people we talk to — especially if you happen to be a New York-based news organization — and remind ourselves that New York is not the real world,” he said.
