President-elect Donald Trump and Vice President-elect Mike Pence have begun receiving the same classified daily intelligence briefings — often referred to as “the book” or PDB — as President Obama and Vice President Joe Biden.

White House press secretary Josh Earnest said Obama had directed that his Republican successor be granted access to the intelligence and national-security materials effective immediately. Trump began receiving intelligence briefings after securing his party’s nomination in July, though the information he received in those meetings was “not at the level of the PDB,” intelligence officials noted.

In addition to giving Trump and Pence having access to the book, the Obama administration plans to host “two interagency exercises to inform and familiarize the incoming administration on domestic incident management practices used by the current administration,” the White House said Wednesday evening.

“These exercises are designed to provide a high-level perspective on a series of challenges that the next administration may confront and to introduce the key authorities, policies, capabilities and structures that are currently in place to respond to major domestic incidents,” noted the current administration.

The daily briefings will likely be made available to the president-elect wherever he is on any given day. The Office of the Director of National Intelligence set up a secured office in Chicago when Obama was elected in 2008, suggesting similar accommodations could be made for Trump in New York.

“This is an important part of ensuring the kind of smooth transition that President Obama has prioritized,” Earnest told reporters.

Trump is slated to meet with Obama at the White House Thursday morning before he heads to Capitol Hill for separate sit-downs with House Speaker Paul Ryan and Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell.
