President-elect Trump picked Elaine Chao as his nominee for secretary of transportation. Chao is well-qualified for the job, having served as the secretary of labor for eight years under President George W. Bush and served as a deputy secretary of transportation for President George H.W. Bush.

It’s also worth noting that Chao is an immigrant. “An immigrant who arrived in America at the age of eight speaking no English, Secretary Chao’s experience transitioning to a new country has motivated her to dedicate most of her professional life to ensuring that all people have the opportunity to build better lives,” a biography on her personal website reads.

Chao’s family came to the United States from China in the early 1960s. Despite knowing no English at age eight, Chao eventually earned an MBA from Harvard Business School.

In terms of transportation, it doesn’t make much difference if the secretary is an immigrant or was born here. But given the vitriol over immigration in the presidential campaign, it’s worth pointing out that Trump is picking an immigrant for such a high-level position.

Trump, of course, focused much of his campaign on illegal immigration, and Chao is a legal immigrant. But his position on legal immigration is slightly less clear. If Trump tries to say legal immigrants are taking jobs from native-born workers, opponents can point to Chao and call Trump a hypocrite.

Either way, Trump was painted by his opponents as anti-immigrant. The policies he enacts may still be that way. But, assuming Chao’s confirmation goes smoothly, at least one immigrant will be in his Cabinet.

For what it’s worth, President Obama’s current secretary of the interior, Sally Jewell, is an immigrant from the United Kingdom.
