Donald Trump always brags about how smart and successful his children are. But his adult boys haven’t been the best spokesmen for their dad’s campaign.

The celebrity billionaire’s third son, Eric Trump, took aim at one of his father’s most notorious supporters, former Louisiana state Rep. and prominent white supremacist David Duke. In doing so, however, he probably went a bit too far.

During a radio interview with Denver talk show host Ross Kaminsky, Eric Trump said of Duke, “The guy does deserve a bullet. I mean, these aren’t good people. These are horrible people.”

To be sure, there’s more than enough room for Duke in Hillary Clinton’s “basket of deplorables.” But even if his hate-filled resume includes imperial wizard of the KKK, potential members of the first family should not be issuing death threats or death wishes on his behalf.

The younger Trump’s words are probably an overcompensation for his father’s earlier failure. The neo-Nazi quickly endorsed Donald Trump during the Republican primary, and Trump caught flack for his reluctance to renounce him when asked in a national television interview. It took his campaign some time to get things together enough to try and distance themselves from the Bayou bigot.

The basic civics education that might prevent such swings between extremes likely wasn’t stressed while a younger Eric was running around Trump tower. If it had been, the young business mogul might understand that talk of settling disagreements in civil society with violence isn’t appropriate during campaigns, even when Duke is the target. Instead, we see a flippant attitude that hints at a lack of critical thinking.
