A new poll finds a majority of likely voters in Massachusetts support expanding the number of public charter schools in the state.

The poll found that 52 percent of likely voters plan to vote yes with 41 percent planning to vote no.

The poll, taken from Sept. 15-20, was conducted by UMass Amherst and WBZ.

The result is surprising for its stark difference from the only other recent poll to ask about the charter ballot question. A poll taken Sept. 7-10 found that 48 percent of voters opposed charter expansion, with only 41 percent in favor.

It’s unlikely that support flipped so wildly in such a short span of time.

That seems to mean there’s a problem with the polls, creating a lot of uncertainty around the ballot question’s fate.

Still, the new poll is good news for charter supporters. The first poll made approval of the ballot question seem unlikely. Going from “unlikely” to “uncertain” is an improvement.

Massachusetts voters will decide on Election Day if they want to eliminate the state’s cap on the number of charter schools and allow 12 new charters to be approved every year on top of the current 78 charter schools there.

Charter schools are publicly funded and do not charge tuition, but they are privately run. Compared to traditional public schools, charters have more independence and flexibility in their operations and curricula, which is why many families find them desirable. They are open to all students, but due to demand they must often use a lottery system to allocate spaces.

The UMass Amherst/WBZ poll also found that 47 percent of likely Massachusetts voters support Hillary Clinton, with 34 percent supporting Donald Trump.
